Vickie Austin Memorial Scholarship Support Trust
Vickie Austin began her nursing career in 1979, graduating from the Red River Technology Center LPN program. She began her career at Duncan Regional Hospital in September, 1979. She loved DRH, choosing never to work as a nurse at any other facility. Vickie was a strong, somewhat opinionated nurse, but always had the patients' best interest at heart.
In the later part of 2004, Vickie was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She and her family chose not to participate in chemo or radiation therapy, but instead to make the most of the time they had left together. Vickie continued to work at DRH until the beginning of 2005 and retired having completed 25 years (and a few months) service.
Sadly, Vickie passed away on March 6, 2005.
Wanting to continue Vickie's spirit of caring, a scholarship fund was established to assist Red River Technology Center LPN students complete their nurse training and carry that same passion for their patients' rights into their new careers. For each of the last six years, a scholarship has been awarded to the student with the highest clinical grade at the June graduation ceremony.
Past recipients have been Gail Martin, Sabra Torrez, Denise Rodgers, Angela Brackett, Laura Parker and in 2010, dual winners Liz Baxter and Pam Moiser.
