Family Remembers Loved One Through Scholarship
 Captain Evettte LaParche Freeman

Alfred H. and Gladys C. LaParche (Hap) have made a $25,000 gift to establish the Evette LaParche Freeman Nursing Scholarship in memory of their daughter, Evette.

The Evette LaParche Freeman Nursing Scholarship will be for University of Oklahoma Nursing students attending the Duncan Regional Hospital Learning Center.  Their gift will be matched with $5,000 through the Communities Foundation of Oklahoma matching program to create a $30,000 scholarship endowment.

Cyndi Crook, Director, DRH Health Foundation said: "The LaParche's have found a lasting and unique way to honor the memory of their daughter, Evette.  This not only provides an educational opportunity for talented nursing students who wish to serve their communities but it memorializes Evette with a legacy of care and healing."

Captain Evette Freeman served in the U.S. Air Force as a member of the Pacific Air Force (PACAF) Aeromedical Evacuation System.  As a Flight Nurse on the C-9A "Nightingale" plane, she assisted in moving patients from southeast Asia station to adequate medical facilities near their home base or to the regional hospital at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines where she was stationed during Vietnam War.  At this time she participated with the airlift of Vietnamese orphans from Saigon (Operation Baby Lift.)

It was during a routine training exercise that Evette was seriously injured in a fall.  Despite 46 surgeries and being in constant pain and experiencing physical limitations, Evette always wore a smile and never complained.  Ultimately, the injuries finally took her life on January 15, 1998 - she was 46 years old.

Her mother, Hap, said Evette always wanted to be a nurse.  Her favorite gift every Christmas was a nursing kit.  "There is no better way to remember Evette than to provide a way for others to reach their dream of becoming a nurse - a dream that Evette herself achieved."
